Corn is a plant that produces a great deal of grain every year and is resistant to insects and poor weather conditions. This is why it was an important food for sedentary Aboriginal peoples, such as the Iroquoians.
The peoples of the Iroquoian family grew the “3 sisters” (squash, beans and corn) together on mounds, where the three plants helped each other : the corn supported the bean vines, the beans kept insects away from the squash, and the squash conserved moisture by casting shadows on the ground.
The women were the ones who tended the gardens. They prepared corn in a variety of ways, including a soup called sagamité and corn flatbread.
