Aboriginal people love to gather together. Sometimes, it’s to celebrate nature. Other times, it’s for a religious ceremony. They also have parties to have fun, dance and feast.
Each Aboriginal nation has unique celebrations. Weddings, births, deaths, hunts and even changes of season are all good reasons to get together.
For example, the Innu used to have a big feast at the beginning of fall, just before families returned to their hunting grounds. They cooked a big game animal, such as caribou. The Innu sang, ate and danced for hours.
Food is still important at today’s gatherings, such as the powwow: the Wendat serve sagamité and the Cree (Eeyou) serve bannock bread.
