On reserves, which are often in remote areas, it is not always possible to see a doctor or nurse, to get help for a drug or alcohol problem, or to seek treatment for a mental health problem. In addition, medical care sometimes fails to respect the Aboriginal culture and way of life. To help someone who lacks self-confidence, for example, it is important but not always possible to take into account their values and beliefs.

Aboriginal communities, assisted by governments, are making efforts to change the situation. In recent years, the First Nations of Quebec and Labrador Health and Social Services Commission has been promoting the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual well-being of Aboriginal peoples. The Commission encourages the development of health programs by and for Aboriginal people that respect their needs.
