Legends interpret historical events, transmit values or explain natural phenomena. They feature real and supernatural characters, such as spirits and mythical creatures.

Several Aboriginal legends explain the creation of the world, for example the Mi’gmaq Glouscap stories. The Huron-Wendat tell that the world was created on the back of a Great Turtle.

Traditionally passed down from generation to generation by the elders, legends and stories are now also available in books, including children’s stories, in movies and on the Internet.
