Located near the town of Roberval, Mashteuiatsh is the only Innu community in the Saguenay-Lac-St-Jean region. Mashteuiatsh, meaning “where there is a point”, is built on the shore of the lake that the Innu named Pekuakami, which means “flat lake”.
Two tourist attractions give everyone a chance to learn more about the Innu culture: Musée amérindien de Mashteuiatsh and Uashassihts, a site featuring traditional entertainment where you can experience activities that took place at powwows and celebrations from 1910 to 1930.
The community’s economy is based on logging, transportation, construction, arts and crafts, and there is also a mini hydro-electric plant.
