Ocher is a rock whose colour varies from yellow to brown to red. It can be ground up and used as a pigment for painting.
The First Peoples used to use red ocher to paint designs on some of their clothing, and they also painted rock faces with signs of communication, real or imaginary characters and objects and scenes related to hunting or war. Drawings were also sometimes engraved in the rock.
