Stories and legends play an important role in Aboriginal traditions. The stories told by the elders help transmit knowledge about the history of the Nation, to give just one example.
Through stories that are colorful and pleasant to hear, legends raise awareness about values that are important to the community. For example, the Inuit legend about how people learned to play helps everyone realize, as they follow the adventures of Teriak, that respect for elders, sharing and community life are important values for the Inuit.
These stories also transmit ways of thinking and ways of understanding the world, as well as beliefs that have been around for thousands of years.
