In Quebec, the Mi’gmaq (Micmac) live in three communities in Gaspésie, but most live in the Atlantic provinces.

The Mi’gmaq are part of the Algonquian linguistic family. Today the Mi’gmaq language is taught at school, and many of them speak French or English. We know that before meeting the Europeans, the Mi’gmaq developed a form of writing that resembled hieroglyphics.

Mi’gmaq communities are often located along a river, since fishing, particularly salmon fishing, is a central element of their traditional way of life.
