An aurora borealis is a luminous phenomenon that occurs in the sky when particles from the sun hit particles from the Earth’s atmosphere. This collision produces light and is only visible at night.

The colour of the aurora borealis varies according to the types of gases found in the Earth’s atmosphere and the height at which it occurs. The aurora borealis can be green, red, yellow, purple, blue and even pink!

Aurorae borealis occur near the Earth’s North Pole. When an aurora happens near the South Pole, it is called an aurora australis.

The beauty and mystery surrounding the aurora borealis have given birth to many Inuit legends. Some of them saw souls playing ball with walrus heads, others saw animals dancing.

Beyond beliefs and stories, the aurora borealis is a natural phenomenon that scientists understand well, but they are still very impressive and spectacular.
