A powwow is an event during which Aboriginal people gather together. The traditional powwow is different from the modern powwow. Spiritual celebrations took place during traditional powwows.
The modern powwow is a celebration during which Aboriginal people get together with friends and family and participate in dance, music and sports competitions.
At a powwow, a sacred fire is prepared and lit before the celebration starts. The guardian of fire takes care of it. He makes sure that the fire stays lit throughout the powwow and that people respect the sacred circle. Near this sacred fire, purification ceremonies are held. People approach the fire and pray. Then, they put tobacco, sweetgrass or cedar directly in the fire so the smoke will carry their prayer.
