In the past, many Aboriginal groups had their own shamans. The shaman was the person who communicated with the spirits. He would do this to ensure a good hunting and fishing season, the protection of his community, to ask for the healing of a sick person, or to plea for rain when there was a drought.

The shaman used traditional plants and herbs to heal people. He was also a very good counsellor, a great wise man and a seer: for example, he could predict the weather.

The Inuit call shamans the “angakkuq”. These Inuit shamans wore a belt that symbolized their power.
