In the past, the Inuit moved from place to place to find food. They never stayed in the same area for long. They were nomads.

In the summer, the Inuit travelled in small groups of about twelve people to hunt game, such as caribou, and to gather berries. They used the kayak or the oumiak to haul heavy loads and hunt marine animals.

In the winter, the Inuit travelled less often. They gathered together in groups of about 100 people. To protect themselves from the cold, they built igloos and stayed in the camp until spring.

Today, the Inuit are no longer nomads. They are sedentary. This means that they live in houses and do not travel to find food anymore.
