Aboriginal people are putting in place, with or without the help of governments, all kinds of projects and organizations to help each other in many life situations. For example, there are projects to help survivors of residential schools, projects to help everyone learn their language, projects to encourage young people to learn about their culture and so on.
Native Friendship Centers exist in several cities. They offer a variety of services to Aboriginal people living in the city because adaptation is sometimes difficult: health references, youth programs, support for businesses, etc. For many First Nations people, Friendship Centers are an important point of reference. In Montreal, the Quebec Aboriginal Project particularly helps homeless Aboriginal people.
The Kiuna Institution was created in Odanak, a Waban-Aki (Abenaki) reserve. It is a CEGEP college where Aboriginal youth can study in an environment that reflects their values and identity. Classes use examples from Aboriginal life and the sharing of knowledge is important.
