Aboriginal youth practice the same recreational activities as other Quebeckers. Sometimes, however, it is more difficult to get access to a swimming pool, library or arena in a small village: sometimes it’s a long way to travel to get to the game.
Sports are often a way to get the entire community involved: the whole family will go watch the hockey game and enjoy talking to cousins and neighbors. Some youth also participate in these activities as motivation to stay in school.
As in almost all of Quebec, hockey is very popular in Aboriginal communities. Some players have been successful in the NHL.
Others prefer to participate in art workshops to learn traditional techniques. They make things like snowshoes or woven baskets. Some have access to artists who teach them how do engraving, carving or embroidery.
And almost all Aboriginal youth, like other young people, play video games and go on social media.
