The harpoon is an important tool, which the Aboriginal people have been using for fishing for many, many years. It is a spear with a tip carved out of rock. It is equipped with hooks to prevent the harpoon from coming out of the prey once it has been hit. This is a very ancient weapon: harpoon heads dating back several thousand years have been found.

The harpoon was used to catch fish such as Arctic char, but also to hunt marine mammals such as the whale, the seal and the beluga.
