Traditional Aboriginal clothing was made of different animal parts (bones, nerves, teeth). When contact with the Europeans started, some clothing was decorated with pieces of cloth (ribbons, pockets) or metal (buttons, decorations, staples).
During ceremonies and celebrations, such as the powwow, the Aboriginal peoples of today still wear traditional clothing of the past. They can display their identity through embroidery and beading, moccasins and jewellery.
When they participate in dance competitions, Aboriginal people wear very colourful ceremonial costumes, sometimes decorated with ribbons or even bells that make sounds when they move. The clothes are accompanied by spectacular headdresses, often including feathers. These costumes are called “regalia”.
