Names
Of those who entered and left the Pétit Séminaire
The Petit Séminaire opened on the first day of October in 1668, after having overcome several obstacles. The motives were to draw the children away from the corruption of sin and licentiousness where the naturalness of the country leads them. Inclining them to the ecclesiastic state and making them serve the Church with decency by teaching them the ? hymns and ceremonies.
What gave occasion to this establishment was that Mr. Talon, Intendant, received an order from the court to work to Frenchify the savages, and to succeed at this, suggested to Monseigneur de Laval, Bishop of Quebec, to remove the children from the Huron nation and ? the Algonquin, and to Frenchify them, it was necessary to mix them with French children. We removed everyone for whom we paid all or part of the board from the Collège des Jésuites. Then we promptly renovated the old house where Mrs. Couillard had lived, which we had purchased from her several years ago. The school was first composed of eight French boys and six Huron boys who entered on the Day of St. Denis. Here are the names.
